Taking the science fair out of the auditorium and into cyberspace.
Dissertation is a web-based science, math and technology class where our 8th grade teams propose solutions to real problems in our
community. The teams then implement that solution and submit the results of their work to compete for regional and national awards.
Our students explore how science, math and technology work together in the real world. And at the same time apply all of the lessons,
experiences and content learned in three years at Pin Oak.
In the eight years Pin Oak has been open our 8th grade students have implemented over 450 service learning projects ranging from locally
important issues like constructing water gauges that warn drivers of flooded under passes to the more globally important issues like getting
immunizations to children in South Africa, or a Project that designed a Pneumatic leg to keep firemen from getting exhausted in high rise
fires to a project to reduce the incidence of west Nile virus in the elderly and homeless, or a project that brought in counselors to help kids
cope with feelings of stress and hopelessness to a project that created a card game for young children to play to learn about cancer. All of
the original ideas and solutions are to numerous to cover here.
Pin Oak has received regional recognition for every year the program has been existence, and we have four national winners in the last 6
years. 82 students and 30 teams have been recognized at the regional or national level and have garnered $255,000 in scholarships and
prizes.
Most importantly our students are forever inspired to do the great things in life that change themselves, their community, and their world.
Pin Oak develops champions.
